SkrīningsSomija

Finnish screening is written into a government decree and delivered by the wellbeing services counties. Breast and cervical screening are long established; bowel screening is being phased in birth cohort by birth cohort until 2031.

Screening is a statutory duty, not a local option

Finland is unusual in writing its screening programme into law. The Government Decree on Screening (valtioneuvoston asetus seulonnoista 339/2011) names which screenings must be arranged, for which ages and at what interval, which is why the offer does not depend on where in the country you live. Since 2023 the duty sits with the wellbeing services counties rather than individual municipalities. The decree also covers pregnancy and newborn screening, so the same instrument governs the scan at twelve weeks and the mammogram at fifty.

The three cancer programmes

Mammography for women aged 50 to 69, repeated every 20 to 26 months — the decree gives a window rather than a flat two years, so your letters will not arrive on an exact anniversary. A cervical sample for women aged 30 to 65 every five years, with several counties also inviting 25-year-olds. And bowel screening, which began in 2022 and is the one still moving: it started with a handful of even ages and widens each year until everyone from 56 to 74 is invited every second year in 2031.

Why your neighbour got a bowel test and you did not

The bowel programme is being introduced by age cohort on purpose, because colonoscopy capacity has to grow with it. In practice that means two people a couple of years apart in age can be in different positions in the queue for several years yet. It is not an oversight and it is not something you can jump; the letter comes with a stool sampling kit when your cohort is called, and the sample is taken at home and posted.

What the letter is, and what happens next

Invitations arrive by post about two weeks before the appointment, with a time already reserved; you can move it. Screening is free and entirely voluntary — declining has no consequence for your other care. If a mammogram raises a question you are called back for further imaging, and most call-backs end with nothing. A positive stool test leads to colonoscopy. The Finnish Cancer Registry runs the mass screening registry that tracks all of this, which is where the national coverage and detection figures come from.

Kur intervāls tiek noteikts reģionāli, norādīts tikai vecums, kurā grupa sākas — atkārtošanas intervālu publicē attiecīgās valsts iestāde. Vecums ir tas vecums, ko sasniedzat kalendārajā gadā, jo mērķa grupas visā reģionā tiek veidotas pēc dzimšanas gada, nevis dzimšanas datuma.

Bieži uzdotie jautājumi

What is the legal basis for screening in Finland?

The Government Decree on Screening 339/2011, which names the screenings that must be arranged, the age groups and the intervals. Since 2023 the wellbeing services counties are responsible for arranging them.

Which ages are invited to bowel screening in Finland?

The programme is being phased in by age cohort. It began in 2022 with a small set of even ages from 60 and widens every year; by 2031 everyone aged 56 to 74 will be invited every second year.

How often is mammography in Finland?

Women aged 50 to 69 are invited every 20 to 26 months. The decree deliberately gives a window rather than a fixed two years, so the gap between your letters can vary by a few months.

Do I have to pay for screening in Finland?

No. The screenings in the decree are free of charge, and taking part is voluntary. You can decline or reschedule without affecting anything else in your care.

Izmeklējumi, uz kuriem jūs tiksiet aicināts

Breast cancer screening (mammography)

An X-ray of each breast, read by two radiologists, repeated every two years across a band of ages that starts at 40 in Sweden and 50 almost everywhere else. What it finds, what it misses and what a call-back means.

50–69, ik 2 years

Cervical screening (HPV test)

Almost every country in the region has switched from looking for abnormal cells to looking for the virus that causes them. The test is better, so the gap between tests is longer — and in several countries you can now take the sample yourself.

30–65, ik 5 years

Bowel cancer screening (stool test)

A sample from one bowel movement, taken at home and posted. It is the only screening programme in the region that routinely prevents cancers rather than only finding them early — because the follow-up removes the polyp.

60–72, ik 2 years
