Adult hearing checks
There is no invitation for adult hearing, and people wait about a decade between first noticing a problem and doing something. The consequences of that delay are larger than most people assume.
This page describes screening programmes; it is not a diagnosis, not a personal risk assessment and not a substitute for your own health service. Age bands are set nationally and change — the invitation you receive, and the body named on your country page, outrank anything written here. Screening is for people without symptoms: a new lump, blood you can see, a mole that has changed, unexplained weight loss or a sudden change in vision or hearing needs a clinician now, whatever a recent screening result said.
Where it is organised
Nowhere in this region as an invitation programme. That is a decision rather than an oversight, and the section below explains the reasoning. It also means nothing will arrive in the post: if this is something you want checked, you have to ask for it.
What early hearing loss actually feels like
Not quietness. The classic first sign of age-related hearing loss is that speech in a restaurant becomes work while the television at home seems fine, because the high frequencies go first and those carry the consonants. Vowels are loud and low; consonants are quiet and high. Lose the consonants and speech becomes audible but not intelligible, which is why the sentence people say is "everyone mumbles" rather than "everything is quiet". Ringing in the ears often arrives around the same time and is frequently what finally prompts an appointment.
Why the delay is expensive
Untreated hearing loss is consistently associated with social withdrawal, low mood and worse cognitive outcomes in later life, and the plausible mechanism is not mysterious: conversation becomes effortful, so people do less of it. There is also an adaptation problem. The auditory system gets out of practice at processing speech, so someone who is fitted with hearing aids after fifteen years of loss adapts more slowly and less completely than someone fitted after three. Acting earlier is not vanity; it is the difference between an aid that works well and one that sits in a drawer.
Getting it tested
The test is a pure-tone audiogram: headphones, a series of tones at different frequencies, and you press a button when you hear one. Ten minutes, no discomfort, and it produces a chart that shows exactly which frequencies have gone. Where you go depends on the country — a hearing centre, an ear nose and throat clinic, or a referral from a family doctor — and the online and app-based hearing checks are a reasonable prompt to book, not a substitute for the audiogram. Before anything else, a doctor should look in the ear, because wax is a common and instantly reversible cause.
The signs that are not age
Some hearing changes are not the gradual, symmetrical loss of ageing and should not be filed as such. Hearing that drops suddenly, especially in one ear, is a medical emergency: sudden sensorineural hearing loss is treatable if seen within days and often permanent if left. Loss in one ear only, hearing loss with vertigo, and hearing loss with facial weakness or discharge all need proper assessment rather than a hearing aid. And noise exposure is the loss you can prevent — earplugs at concerts and in workshops cost almost nothing and the damage they prevent is permanent.

Questions fréquentes
What is the first sign of hearing loss?
Difficulty following speech in a noisy room while ordinary listening still feels fine. High frequencies go first and they carry the consonants, so speech stays audible but stops being intelligible — which is why people describe others as mumbling.
Is there a hearing screening programme for adults?
No. Newborns are screened and children are checked at school, but adults have to ask. This is a large part of why people take so many years to act on a loss they have already noticed.
Why does waiting to get hearing aids matter?
The auditory system gets out of practice at processing speech. Someone fitted after many years of loss adapts more slowly and less completely than someone fitted early, which is a common reason aids end up unused.
When is hearing loss an emergency?
When it comes on suddenly, particularly in one ear. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is often treatable if assessed within days and frequently permanent if it is not. Loss with vertigo, facial weakness or discharge also needs prompt assessment.
The rest of the surface
Breast cancer screening (mammography)
An X-ray of each breast, read by two radiologists, repeated every two years across a band of ages that starts at 40 in Sweden and 50 almost everywhere else. What it finds, what it misses and what a call-back means.
Cervical screening (HPV test)
Almost every country in the region has switched from looking for abnormal cells to looking for the virus that causes them. The test is better, so the gap between tests is longer — and in several countries you can now take the sample yourself.
Bowel cancer screening (stool test)
A sample from one bowel movement, taken at home and posted. It is the only screening programme in the region that routinely prevents cancers rather than only finding them early — because the follow-up removes the polyp.
Prostate screening (PSA)
Latvia and Lithuania fund PSA testing for men in their fifties and sixties. Sweden assessed the same evidence and recommends against an organised programme. Here is what the trials actually found.
Lung cancer screening (low-dose CT)
The trials are positive and the European recommendation asks countries to build programmes stepwise. In this region it is still pilots rather than invitations — but the eligibility rule is worth knowing.
What screening can and cannot do
Overdiagnosis, false positives, interval cases and lead-time bias — the four ideas behind every disagreement between countries.

The record that makes the appointment shorter
TempoLife keeps weight, blood pressure, sleep and symptoms in one place, so the questions you get asked at a screening appointment already have answers.
